Roderick Larwrie the Conservative campaigner for Norham and Islandshire, was horrified and shocked when his attention was drawn to the death of one women and countless drivers injured at a terrible black spot on the A697. What makes this worse is that this black spot remains a potential death trap with the road in a terrible condition and that these accidents amazingly are going unreported. Roderick is deeply concerned and wants to know why these accidents are going unreported. The police and ambulance service get called on a regular basis yet nothing appears to be being done.
Last week Roderick visited the site between Cornhill and Barelees Farm on the A697 and collected car parts from 11 different accidents. Local farmers Howard and Thomas Todd explained to Roderick that the dangerous camber of the road catches drivers unaware and causes their cars to skid off the road. Thomas Todd said “hardly a month goes by without us having to rescue crash victims, call the police or worse an ambulance and direct traffic”. The bridge has been hit so many times the highways agency have given up rebuilding it.
Roderick has given his assurance he will investigate further and hopefully get something done about this dangerous bend before it claims another life.
