A summer like no other for the North of England was launched yesterday with the opening of the Great Exhibition of the North on Newcastle Quayside.
The exhibition will be the country’s biggest event of 2018 and will be a summer-long celebration of the North of England’s pioneering and innovative spirit. Get North will showcase the way northern people have inspired the world for centuries.

This will give Northumberland the opportunity to showcase exactly what it has to offer, encouraging visitors and residents to explore our stunning county and see for themselves what makes Northumberland so special. We want to put Northumberland on the regional, national and international map.
Great Northumberland 2018 will be launched in Hexham on July 7 with a breathtaking opening show produced by Walk the Plank - one of the leading arts companies in the world renowned for their spectacular showcase events - in and around the Abbey gardens and bandstand, featuring street theatre (including the world-renowned SPARK! LED drummers) music, comedy and a main stage, from where representatives of all the participating venues will introduce their own contributions to the summer's activities. The fun starts at 12pm on the day.
Great Northumberland 2018 will culminate with a celebration of the unique musical traditions and talent of Northumberland. On September 1 in Berwick-upon-Tweed a children’s choir and fanfare of trumpets outside the Guildhall will herald the start of a concert that showcases the newly-commissioned song suite ‘Song of the North’ alongside a performance from locally-based mezzo soprano Tamsin Davidson, contemporary settings of familiar Northumbrian songs and an introduction to the Northumbrian pipes.
Northumberland is a place where everyone is welcome and where there is truly something for everyone, from castles and heritage sites, to 103km long-distance path, cycle routes, beaches, coastal walks, theatre, music, film, exhibitions and adventure.
