Councillor Dodd, the County Councillor for Ponteland North, introduced a motion to Labour-ran Northumberland Council that would have seen the Council use its shares in Newcastle Airport to scrap the charge. Despite being told that 93% of people surveyed in an Evening Chronicle online poll agreed with Councillor Dodd, the Council refused to go ahead with the plan, with Labour Councillors voting against and Lib Dem Councillors abstaining.
Cllr Dodd said that it is ridiculous that you have to haul heavy suitcases along a six minute walk from the free car park to the airport building and then dash back to your car so you don't get fined when you use the free car park; or have to pay a pound for the privelege of being able to say a very quick goodbye to your loved ones when doing them a favour.
The Mayor of Ponteland, Conservative Town Councillor Carl Rawlings, agreed with Richard Dodd and Northumberland Conservatives, pointing out the horrendous traffic issues it creates particularly in the Ponteland area, with cars parked in Rotary Way and down toward Prestwick Cemetry.
