The Town Council has unveiled plans which, if approved, would see the historic Village Square covered in flat paving for events, festivals & activities which looks like a poor copy of the failed and hated Blyth Town Scheme. The area, around the War Memorial, could also see the gardens flattened and possibly removable planters placed there. The Town Council are asking for your opinions on the proposed ‘new look’. However, hundreds of residents have pointed out that the “consultation” didn't offer the opportunity to reject the paving plans so you don’t have a choice of saying NO to the scheme!
Mark Swinburn raised this at the heated meeting, which was packed to capacity, and was told the council would “redesign” the consultation but comments made from the top table suggest that the scheme is still favoured by the leadership of the council.
Mark said: “This has been designated a Conservation Area for a reason, and we should make every effort we can to keep this in line with its historical surroundings”. Mark Swinburn started a petition which was signed by over 1500 people in the first week.
